Can I order grain spawn from Mossy Creek Mushrooms?

Ah, indeed! You can absolutely order our fine grain spawn directly from the Mossy Creek Mushrooms website! For each of our strains, simply navigate to the drop-down menu, where you’ll find the delightful option to select grain spawn. Now, we offer two marvelous choices for you to consider:

First, we have custom spawn by strain, tailored specifically to your needs, which requires a bit of patience with a 2-3 week shipping window. For those who crave a quicker solution, we proudly offer our Seasonal Bulk Spawn Packs (SBSP)—pre-made for your convenience and shipped with great speed, unless demand has outpaced our production, in which case there may be a slight delay.

Each of these splendid grain spawn bags weighs between 5 to 6 pounds and is composed of the finest organic whole oats and hardwood sawdust—a blend both hearty and sustainable. We take great pride in sourcing our grain locally from Farmer Co-ops, only seeking out-of-state options when seasonal supply dwindles.

So, my fellow mycologists, whether you opt for custom or bulk, know that quality and care go into every bag!

Do you have a retail store front, and may I purchase from it directly?

Thank you so much for your interest in a retail storefront! At Mossy Creek Mushrooms, our thoughtfully designed facility is the beating heart of our operation, where we meticulously craft every aspect of our products—from spores to agar plates, slants, and spawn. While we don’t have a traditional retail storefront with a large amount of living inventory on hand, Mossy Creek Mushrooms focuses on fresh cultivation, breeding, and strict maintenance of a diverse library of over 400 unique strains. Given the nature of our work and our lean manufacturing principles, it is difficult for us to have all strains perfectly ready at any give stage of propagation, or anticipate visits in advance. Every order is custom-made upon payment to ensure the highest level of freshness and viability. Our product line strives to offer something for everyone—from the growing hobbyist to esteemed educational institutions and large-scale agricultural operations. Each order undergoes a comprehensive Quality Assurance process before being prepared for shipment or local pickup. If you’re local or visiting from out of state and would like to pick up an order, we’d be happy to schedule an appointment for you! Just let us know in advance, and we’ll ensure everything is perfect for your visit!

What are your operating hours?

Our operating hours vary significantly and depend entirely on supply and demand. We are open to the general public by appointment only between the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. We are closed on all holidays. Scheduled classes/mentorships, approved compost pick-ups, or local CSA fufillment with proof of receipt are all acceptable. We are closed on Saturday and Sunday to allow our staff to be with their families. If you see a cleaning crew at night, do not pull into the parking lot and try to force your way into the building. A police escort will be called to lovingly help you along your way and your vehicle will be thoughtfully towed at your expense.

If I drop by your warehouse, will you teach me how to grow mushrooms?

We greatly appreciate everyone’s enthusiasm for learning about mushroom cultivation and the avid desire to visit our facility. While we value in-person engagement, running a commercial mushroom farm requires our team to maintain a focused and efficient workflow to meet production and shipping deadlines. Our facility additionally includes restricted areas with specialized equipment, and for safety and logistical reasons, we kindly ask the integrity of designated ‘Employee’s Only’ areas be maintained to ensure your safety and the privacy of our operations.

To meet the demand for educational opportunities, we offer seasonal classes in public facilities, phone consultations, live Q&A sessions through our social media platforms, and themed podcast episodes addressing everything from some of the most common mushroom growing conundrums to advanced cultivation techniques!

For a more in-depth experience, we offer weeklong mentorships at our discretion, which allows participants to gain hands-on experience with guidance from our team. These mentorships are carefully curated and structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of mushroom cultivation. A signed mandatory waiver is required to participate.

Last but not least, our YouTube channel features an extensive library of over 200 educational videos. Boasting 50,000 subscribers and thousands of views, these videos offer step-by-step recipes and tutorials, expert tips, and seasonal behind-the-scenes insights into our processes and strains.

With these resources readily available, we kindly encourage you to take advantage and exhaust these options first, as they provide a wealth of knowledge and guidance for mushroom enthusiasts at every experience level.

Do you sell the illegal kind of mushrooms, and can I purchase some from you?

No, and you are in fact, quite correct. Psilocybin mushrooms are illegal in the state of Tennessee. The answer is quite straightforward; possession or use of psilocybin mushrooms—commonly known for their psychedelic properties—in Tennessee, can land you with serious drug crime charges. The state law classifies them as Schedule I drugs, alongside substances like LSD and Ecstasy. Psilocybin mushrooms are considered to have a high potential for abuse with no recognized medical use under federal law. Penalties for possession are severe, ranging from 8 to 30 years in prison and fines up to $100,000. This classification means they are considered to have a high potential for abuse and have zero accepted medical purposes under federal law. Penalties for getting caught holding? It’s not pretty. You could be looking at an 8-30 year jail sentence alongside fines up to $100,000 according to Tennessee’s Schedule I drug laws.

But wait. What about mushrooms spores?

After all, they’re just dormant life forms waiting for ideal conditions to sprout into full-grown shrooms. Fascinatingly enough, the mushroom spores don’t contain any traceable amount of psilocybin which technically makes their sale and possession legal across most states including Tennessee. However, it’s important to note that cultivating those spores into mature magic mushrooms would quickly catapult your actions from completely legal right into felony territory.

At Mossy Creek Mushrooms, we do not sell, study, or have any psilocybin strains available for microscopy study or any other purpose. We ask that you please refrain from inquiring about them or showing up at our facility high and asking if we want some.

Are pets allowed?

At Mossy Creek Mushrooms we are accompanied by two resident shop cats, and a schnoodle named ‘Teddy Roo”, who help keep our environment pest-free and secure. The cats diligently manage our zero-tolerance policy for mice, while our schnoodle serves as an effective “doorbell” in our office and breakroom and ratter. To ensure a calm and productive workspace, we kindly ask that visitors refrain from adding to the excitement by bringing additional animals. The last time someone brought their dog, it ended the life of Teddy Roo’s father ‘Venture’, which was a very sad day for us all. Also, please note that visits to our facility are by appointment only, and we respectfully request that you do not arrive without a prior arrangement. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

How long does it take to ship once I order?

All orders at Mossy Creek Mushrooms take approximately 3 to 6 weeks for fulfillment, depending on the specific strain, chosen medium, and seasonal temperatures. This timeframe ensures that each order is custom-made, carefully cultivated, and at peak performance. We appreciate your patience, as certain strains and conditions may require additional time to meet our high standards. Rest assured, our team is committed to delivering the highest quality products within this timeframe.
