Permaculture, Outdoor Integration, Soil Health & Fungal Ecology
Live Online Demonstration | Private Stream + Discord Access
Instructor: Andrew Reed, Founder of Mossy Creek Mushrooms
Overview
Mushrooms are more than a crop—they’re infrastructure.
This class explores how fungi fit into permaculture-informed gardens, homesteads, and sustainable market garden systems, using mushrooms to build soil, recycle organic waste, retain moisture, and reduce inputs over time. We’ll focus on low-tech, biologically driven methods that work with natural systems rather than against them.
The emphasis is on designing outdoor systems that improve year after year—not maximizing short-term yield at the expense of resilience.
What You’ll Learn
Spent Substrate as a Resource
- How to reuse spent mushroom substrate effectively
- Where it benefits soil structure and fertility
- When and where it doesn’t belong
Outdoor Mushroom Species
- Wine caps in garden beds, pathways, and rows
- Almond Agaricus in rich organic soils
- Site selection, bed construction, and seasonal timing
Low-Tech Inoculation Methods
- Garden-scale and homestead-scale inoculation
- Minimal tools, minimal inputs
- Working with natural materials instead of fighting them
Sustainable Market Garden Integration
- Recycling farm and garden waste streams with fungi
- Mushrooms in margins, paths, and windrows
- Complementing vegetable and perennial production
- Designing systems that don’t add labor
Soil Health & Fungal Ecology
- Fungi–bacteria–plant interactions
- Building fungal-dominant soils
- Mulch, wood chips, and organic matter strategies
Wetland & Water-Adjacent Gardening
- Mushrooms in moist and low-lying areas
- Integration with wetland and greywater-adjacent systems
- Species tolerant of fluctuating moisture
Hugelkultur & Wood-Based Systems
- Using fungi to accelerate wood breakdown
- Inoculating hugelkultur beds
- Long-term fertility and moisture retention
What This Class Is Not
- Not indoor mushroom cultivation
- Not a high-tech lab course
- Not a one-season miracle solution

If you’re interested in lower-input, biologically driven food systems, mushrooms belong at the table.
Let’s grow food—and soil—at the same time.
