An Appalachian Classic, Refined Through Selection
Not every breeding project starts with a laboratory cross. Sometimes it starts with a walk in the woods, a healthy wild specimen, and a simple question:
“What happens if we let nature show us her hand?”
Turkey Island #1 traces its lineage back to a wild turkey tail collected from Turkey Island on Cherokee Lake in East Tennessee. That original fruitbody was spore printed, and those spores were allowed to find one another again through controlled breeding and selection. From that work emerged multiple descendants, each with their own character and personality.
Turkey Island #1 was one of the standouts.
Like the wild mushroom that started it all, this strain is vigorous, resilient, and beautiful. It produces dense shelves of richly banded fruitbodies with the classic concentric zones that have made Turkey Tail one of the most recognized medicinal mushrooms in the world.
Wild Appalachian Genetics
Derived from a wild specimen collected on Turkey Island in Cherokee Lake, preserving a small piece of East Tennessee fungal heritage.
Selected From a Self-Bred Population
Rather than being a direct wild clone, this strain emerged from a breeding project using spores from the original collection, allowing natural variation and selection to reveal standout performers.
Excellent for Extract Production
Turkey Tail is among the most widely researched medicinal mushrooms, prized for its polysaccharides and long history of traditional use.
Aggressive Colonization
Fast-growing mycelium that eagerly consumes hardwood-based substrates and quickly establishes itself.
Beautiful Fruiting Characteristics
Produces classic multi-colored shelves with rich zoning patterns and excellent visual appeal.
A Living Piece of the Mycologeum
Part of our ongoing effort to preserve, study, and share wild Appalachian fungal genetics.
Most Turkey Tail growers focus entirely on the fruitbody. The real magic happens before you ever see a shelf emerge.
Turkey Tail is a champion decomposer, a tireless recycler of hardwoods, and one of the forest’s greatest engineers. Every flush represents an immense amount of invisible work happening beneath the surface.
Sometimes the quiet workers deserve a little respect.
