Can Mushrooms Safely Decrease Our Plastic Problem?

Most people are aware of the fact that we have a problem with plastic pollution. It is damaging wildlife, and our oceans are slowly filling up with it. There have been many attempts to decrease the amount of plastic floating around, but burning it just releases a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which creates a new set of problems. 

Researchers might have discovered the beginning of a solution in mushrooms that eat plastic waste, and don’t seem to absorb any of the dangerous chemicals. While this is just in the prototype stage, the research can open the doors to discovering more potential solutions. If this is able to progress we could get rid of a hazardous product while producing a necessary one; food.

Imagine turning all this trash into perfectly delicious food.

The image above is just one of many similar pictures. While I don’t believe this one machine is the complete answer to the problems we face with plastic, it is definitely a big step in the right direction. There are many ways we can work this to benefit the world. Instead of filling up landfills at the speed we do, we could send the plastic to special mushroom farms, or something similar. We still have a long way to go before the problem is fully taken care of, but it’s nice to have some promising results so far.
